Chapter 5

Extra Equipment At Home

This chapter deals with equipment not covered by Medicare or insurance, but may make your home healthcare experience easier and safer. The equipment includes portable wheelchair ramps, home fire extinguishers and smoke detector/alarms, UPS power systems and household items.

Most of these items are not expensive and some of the longer lasting ones can later be sold used. None can be rented, but you can buy some of them used.

Medical home healthcare companies are set up to bill Medicare and private insurance, so they may not carry all these items. There are great deals from Internet vendors and big box stores.

When considering the purchase of these items, keep in mind Murphy's Law:

"If something can go wrong, it will."

If your loved one uses powered equipment, such as an air pump mattress system and you assume you will not need a back up battery power system (UPS), because you have not had a power outage lately, Murphy's Law can be adapted to:

"If something can go wrong, but has yet to do so, it is probably overdue."
